Every year, 18 million women survive completed sexual acts or attempted
sexual acts of an unwanted nature and five percent of female rape
survivors become pregnant after a single, unprotected sexually abusive
encounter; 2.8 million men have sexually abusive encounters.
Sexual abuse does not discriminate. Male individuals can be victimized, regardless of whether they are homosexual or heterosexual. Seventy five percent of child survivors of sexual abuse are female and 90 percent of children who survive sexual abuse know their abusers. Nearly half of the youths who are sexually abused are under the age of 18 and 15 percent of those are under the age of 12.
